This SPF blog post is inspired by a conversation in my DM‘s. I swear the best content goes down in the DM’s.
I was asked:
Do we need to use higher than SPF 15 in winter?
Do we still need to wear sunscreen in the winter? Or, is it fine to lower your sun protection factor for winter?
This DM triggered me to revisit the topic of sunscreen for winter skin…
So here we go — If you think you need to adjust your SPF a little lower for winter, think again! Why? Because sunscreen is not something that you wear only when it’s sunny. Sunscreen is to be worn whenever it’s daylight and you’re exposed to the sun. So — YES — this includes the winter months.
Whether it’s sunny or cloudy — skin-damaging UV rays are present and contribute to premature aging, hyperpigmentation, uneven tone, and even *gasp* skin cancer. So, it’s important that you not only wear sunscreen during the summer, it’s also important to wear it throughout the winter as well.
Today I’m sharing a few sunscreens that I love for winter. I’ll break them down by benefits, affordability, key ingredients, etc. Grab a pen and pad or print out this post because I’m about to drop major gems…..
Bolden SPF 30 Brightening Moisturizer
This is one of my new go-to sunscreen products. For winter, my skincare is always super focused on brightening and reversing any summer sun damage. First and foremost, this sunscreen melts invisibly into the skin because if it did not, why would I even be talking about it because that’s a waste of time.
Loaded with Vitamin C, skin loving hydrators and antioxidants, this rich moisturizer protects and brightens in one step. I’ve been using Bolden SPF 30 Brightening Moisturizer for over a month and I definitely see brighter skin looking back at me in the mirror!
By Terry UV Base Sunscreen Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 50
Pricey but worth it — this cream-gel, the moisturizing primer contains vitamin E, feels weightless is perfection under foundation and concealer. If you prefer more of a matte or velvety finish, you’ll love the way your skin feels after applying By Terry UV Base Sunscreen Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 50. The one-ounce tube fits conveniently in the palm of my hand …most days (winter only) I keep it in my car and apply it as my last step while I wait for my car to warm up. Hey, a girl’s gotta have her skin care hacks!
AVEENO PROTECT + HYDRATE LOTION SUNSCREEN WITH BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 50 FOR FACE
I love that this facial sunscreen contains colloidal oatmeal, which helps to soothe sensitive skin and lock in moisture. The formula is oil-free, absorbs quickly and retails for under $7. So, yep, that’s — skin soothing hydration plus UVA/UVB protection for about $6.99. I’ll take 2!
SUPERGOOP! Defense Refresh Setting Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 50
When I’m asked, “What’s the best sunscreen for the face?”…I always respond the same way — “It’s the one that you WANT to wear.” — because if you don’t WANT to wear it, you won’t wear it. There are so many incredible formulas out there, it’s simply a matter of finding the formula that works best for you. When I am out and about and need to re-apply every two hours (because I’m having lots of direct sun exposure) I switch to SUPERGOOP! Defense Refresh Setting Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 50 because it’s sprayable and makes reapplication a breeze. I also don’t have to worry about disturbing my makeup because this spray on sunscreen also helps to lock in makeup.
Fresh SUGAR LIP TREATMENT SUNSCREEN SPF 15
Please don’t forget to protect your lips. I love bold lipstick shades — particularly in winter — but I always layer my lip sunscreen underneath. fresh SUGAR LIP TREATMENT SUNSCREEN SPF 15 is one of my favorites because I adore the faint hint of citrus scent when I apply it. The intoxicating lip balm contains sugar (a natural humectant) and a blend of nourishing oils to soften, soothe and improve the texture of cracked winter lips.
